Where is Cherry Grove?
Cherry Grove is located on Fire Island New York, approximately 50 miles east of New York City. Fire Island is a barrier island which runs parallel to Long Island's south shore. With the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Great South Bay to the north. This beautiful beach getaway runs about 35 miles long and half a mile wide, the eastern part of fire island ends in the Hamptons while the western point meets the Nassau County town beach areas. Cherry Grove and it's neighbor The Fire Island Pines are the only predominantly "Gay communities" on Fire Island, among 15 + other small towns or communities.

Getting to Cherry Grove, Fire Island
Cherry Grove is about and hour and a half from New York City. There are plenty of options as far as transportation, so you have no excuse! Driving from New York City on the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to exit 59 follow signs to Sayville. Long Island Rail Road, departing from Penn Station in New York City to the Sayville train station, from there you will see plenty of vans and taxies that take you directly to the ferry terminal. Buses go directly from New York City to the ferry terminal in Sayville, and are relatively inexpensive and convenient. Flying, McArthur airport in Long Island is the closest to Sayville, however other metropolitan airports like JFK, and La Guardia will work just as well. For the adventurous type there is a sea plane service from Manhattan to Fire Island Pines an easy walk to Cherry Grove, of course this may get a little pricey. Details about travel can be found below.

Whether driving, busing or train/taxiing it, you eventually have to get on a boat to reach this unique barrier island (unless you take the sea plane). The Sayville Ferry Service provides passage on the last leg of your journey. Adult passage is $10.00 round trip, and parking is available at $6.00 for the day during the week, $7.00 on the weekends: Seasonal parking is available, at $405.00 for April 1 thru October 31.

No private cars are allowed on the island. Ferry or water taxi, from the Sayville ferry terminal is the only way to get to Cherry Grove. The ferry terminal in Sayville has individual areas of departure so that you may travel to other various towns on Fire Island.

Driving to Sayville
1. Long Island Expressway East to exit 59 - Ocean Avenue.

2. Arriving at the service road, turn right at the first light on Ocean Avenue (that will be Route 93).

3. Take Route 93 South for 6-1/2 miles (Note: 93 will become Lakeland Avenue) to Main Street - which is the traffic light following the second RR crossing. (second RR crossing will be LIRR Sayville station). Cross over Main Street and continue ahead about a half mile to the stop sign, which dead-ends at Edwards Avenue. Turn left on Edwards Avenue.

4. At the next stop sign turn right on Foster Avenue and continue about 100 yards, you will see signs for the ferries (sign on right side of the street). At Terry Street, make a left.

5. Continue on Terry Street , to the next intersection (restaurant on your left side) and make a right turn onto River Road (unmarked but you will see the Ferry Terminal Signs). Look for ferry terminal on your left side, and you will find the gates for Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines. There is both seasonal and daily parking lots. Seasonal parking is adjacent to the Cherry Grove gate, while daily visitors must park across the street from the terminal.

The Long Island Rail Road
1. Take the Long Island Railroad from New York City's Penn Station (Seventh Avenue and 33rd Street) to Sayville. Make sure to check with the conductor about connections and changes. You will have to change to connecting trains going to eastern Long Island on the way, these connections are usually made at the Jamaica or Babylon stations. Fares vary depending on time of travel.

2. Commuter vans and Taxi's will be waiting at the Sayville train station to take you to the ferry terminal.

When you detrain, you'll see the two cab companies that provide service to and from the Sayville ferry terminal (Colonial Cab and Village Cab Co.). The trip from the train to the ferry will cost around $2.00 each way.

Buses from Manhattan
This is a great way to travel if you want to avoid the subway/train/cab hassle. The bus is available from a number of stops in Manhattan directly to the Sayville Ferry. The prices is $20 one way, you can get a 12 trip ticket for $175. Reservations are required for all bus trips, too and from Fire Island. Horizon Coach
